China’s New ADAS Safety Standard Raises the Bar for Smart-Car Claims
China’s GB 47955-2026 standard for combined driver-assistance systems will affect how smart-car functions are tested, explained and valued in the used-car market.
China has released a mandatory national standard for combined driver-assistance systems used in intelligent and connected vehicles, marking a clearer regulatory baseline for one of the fastest-growing parts of the passenger-car market. The standard, GB 47955-2026, was approved by the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China and is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the standard covers three types of combined driver-assistance systems: basic single-lane systems, basic multi-lane systems and navigation-assisted driving systems. It also sets requirements for function performance, data recording, manufacturer safety guarantees, human-machine interaction, user instructions and user training.
Smart-Car Features Need a Clearer Safety Language
Driver-assistance technology has moved quickly from premium options into mainstream Chinese passenger cars. MIIT said that since the beginning of 2026, about 70% of new passenger cars in China have been equipped with combined driver-assistance functions, while models with navigation-assisted driving have exceeded 30% penetration. That makes ADAS no longer a niche feature. It is becoming a normal part of how cars are marketed, compared and valued.
The challenge is that buyers often see different names for systems that may have very different operating limits. Terms such as NOA, pilot assist and intelligent driving can sound similar in advertising, but the safety responsibilities still sit with the driver in many scenarios. By defining categories and baseline requirements, the new standard gives regulators, manufacturers and consumers a more common language.
Used Smart Cars Will Need More Than a Feature List
For the used-car market, the standard may gradually change inspection habits. A vehicle equipped with driver-assistance functions cannot be evaluated only by whether the feature appears on a screen. Buyers and dealers need to understand the system category, sensor condition, software status, data-recording capability and user instructions tied to that model.
This matters especially for used new-energy vehicles and higher-trim SUVs, where ADAS features often influence price. If a system has been disabled, poorly maintained or misunderstood by a previous owner, the vehicle’s real value may differ from what the feature label suggests. A clear standard can make future resale discussions more evidence-based and less dependent on vague promotional language.
Regulation May Also Cool Exaggerated Marketing
The timing is important. China’s auto market has become intensely competitive, and smart-driving functions are often used to distinguish similar models. A mandatory safety baseline can help separate usable assistance from overstated claims. It may also make vehicle manufacturers more careful about how they describe system limits, driver responsibility and training requirements.
For cross-border used-car buyers, the takeaway is practical. Smart features can add value, but only when they are documented, functional and understood. As regulations mature, the best used-car listings will likely show not just mileage and battery condition, but also software version, sensor health and clear notes on assisted-driving capability.
