Audi Reveals €600,000 Nuvolari, a Hybrid Supercar, Not an EV

Article OverviewAudi unveiled the Nuvolari, a €600,000 1,000+ hp hybrid supercar built on Lamborghini tech. The R8 successor uses hybrid, not pure EV — and the choice is the news.

Audi unveiled the Nuvolari — the brand's most expensive car ever, at roughly €600,000, a 1,000+ hp hybrid supercar built on Lamborghini Huracán-derived tech and pitched as the R8's spiritual successor, according to reporting from Business Insider Deutschland, Leadersnet, and Motor1 Deutschland. The number that matters is not 600,000 or 1,000. It is "hybrid."

The four-out-of-four pattern

Inside ten days, the world has watched Lamborghini delay its first EV, Porsche pause Taycan production, Audi confirm the new Q7 will be a PHEV, not an EV, and now Audi launch its halo replacement as a hybrid. Four premium-bracket decisions, all pointing the same direction: at €60k+ list price, hybrid is the powertrain that gets greenlit; pure EV is the powertrain that gets delayed, hedged, or quietly scoped down.

The Nuvolari is the cleanest version of this signal because there is no excuse for hybrid at this price point if EV were the obvious answer. Audi could have made it pure-electric — the engineering, the supplier base, and the brand permission all exist. They chose hybrid. The R8 the Nuvolari replaces was an icon precisely because it sounded and behaved like a V10 supercar. The new car keeps the combustion theater (Lamborghini-sourced engine + electric augmentation) while adding the torque profile EV buyers want, without committing to the charging dependency a pure EV would impose on its target customer.

What this looks like to a buyer

The Nuvolari buyer has a garage with multiple cars and the financial flexibility to keep a pure-EV in addition. What they do not want is to drive their flagship halo car to a destination and discover the charger queue is two hours long. Hybrid solves that problem at the cost of complexity that the price bracket can absorb. For 95% of the buying population, that calculation is theoretical. For Nuvolari customers, it is the deal.

The reason this matters beyond Audi is that the Nuvolari sets the new center-of-gravity for premium-supercar powertrain design. If Audi can sell a €600,000 hybrid in 2027 without buyers asking why it is not electric, Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin, and Bentley all have permission to do the same. The "first-pure-EV-halo car" race that Ferrari Luce was supposed to start two weeks ago turns out to have a quiet counter-narrative: the price bracket above €500k may settle on hybrid as the default for longer than anyone in 2024 predicted.
